Back in 2009, Sporting News came up with a list of “the 50 greatest coaches of all time.” I thought it would be fun to put an adjective to a select number of them and highlight what it really means to be “Great.” By the way, they are listed in order of “greatness.”
Inspirational: “Coaches who can outline plays on a black board are a dime a dozen. The ones who win get inside their player and motivate.”
Vince Lombardi
Compassionate: “Love is the force that ignites the spirit and binds teams together.”
Phil Jackson
Motivating: “I don't know any other way to lead but by example.” Don Shula
Astute: “Build up your weaknesses until they become your strong points.”
Knute Rockne
Powerful: “A winner never whines.” Paul Brown
Determined: “Failures are expected by losers, ignored by winners.” Joe Gibbs
Perceptive: “Leadership is getting someone to do what they don't want to do, to achieve what they want to achieve.” Tom Landry
Balanced: “I guess more players lick themselves that are ever licked by an opposing team. The first thing any man has to know is how to handle himself.” Connie Mack
Truth-Seeking: “Each Warrior wants to leave the mark of his will, his signature, on important acts he touches. This is not the voice of ego but of the human spirit, rising up and declaring that it has something to contribute to the solution of the hardest problems, no matter how vexing!” Pat Riley
Reasonable: “When you don't know that you don't know, it's a lot different than when you do know that you don't know.” Bill Parcells
Convicted: “If the day ever comes when I can swallow defeat, I'll quit.” Toe Blake
Humble: “I don't believe a manager ever won a pennant. Casey Stengel won all those pennants with the Yankees. How many did he win with the Boston Braves and Mets?”
Sparky Anderson
Looking forward to hearing comments on this one...D.
