Owen Kenny

NYC Ironman

Born down in St. Vincents Hospital in the Village, the NYC Ironman will bring me to the Finish Line on the West Side exactly to the day 44 years later. 24 Weeks of highly scheduled training. Hoping the Race is only about 12 hours, but Running the good 44 years is of-course the Real Race

Hot & Heavy Week 19

July 2, 2012

With Heavy Legs logged what will be the Top of Training weeks of exactly 17 Hours of Hard Swm, Bike, Run exercise this week.   Saturday as a 97 Mile Ride (close to 10,000 Elevation feet gain) followed with a 5 Mile Transition Run.  The Ride was HOT - over 90 degrees.  Stopped a two 7-Elevens and a Deli throughout to purchase cold water and create my cold shower.  Usualy a 100 mile Ride I can get away with just one quick stop.   All throughout the Ride I was fretting the 20 Mile Run the following day.   However by Nightime, after fed and showered, I thought I would be okay for my 20 Mile Run.

Sunday's 20 Mile Run was HARD.  Heavy Legs and 90 degree heat, lots of hills (3,300 Feet Elevation Gain) and had to even fight back thoughts of quitting after 15 Miles, and all throughout the last 5 Miles.  Which is a real glimpse into how hard it was, cause generally the belief is that 'not quitting' will be my downfall, whether it be Windsurfing/Kitesurfing in High Winds or Ski challenges.   Didn't smile till over the last hill and only had abot 0.4 left.  Had my water belt, bottles of water in hand, still had to stop at 3 Hoses.  All that took me 3:19, and was shooting for closer to 3:05 (Total Running Mileage of week was 38.7 Miles). Cooled off, rested for about 2 hours and then embarked on the 2.25 Mile Swim, which was great to the Buoy 1 Mile out, but the return was aginst the Wind, Chop, and current.  Tough way to finish up the Mack Daddy weeekend.

Stoked this weekend is over !  It was a touh one that yah gotta mentally and physically prepare for. (The only part of the Training this week I actually enjoyed was my 21 Mile Wednesday Ride, LOL). Sunday evening, once I let my Recovery Drink digest I Celebrated Sunday night with some Red Wine, then a little more :) since I'll go on the Wagon till after the Race at this point.  In 2 weeks, there will be a week that approaches this one, just shy a bit on Running and on Bike Hills, but after that, a slow Taper till Race Day. But this week, I just embark on a nice easy Recovery week.

Starting to feel a littl excited, knowing that the most difficult training of the schedule is now in the past.
