This is without a doubt one of the great stories I have ever heard. Paralympian Monique Von der Vorst won 2 silver medals in the handcycling road at the Beijing Paralympics and a World Ironman Championship. She has been paralyzed from the waist down since she was 13 as a result of a car accident.
From her website:
"(in 2010)Again I got involved in an accident, followed by a long period in the hospital. I got a lot spasm in my legs and suddenly I felt some twinklings in my paralyzed legs. It was so strange because I hadn’t felt anything in my left leg for 12 years. Later I could move my legs a bit and from that moment I really tried everything to get my legs working again. I spend months in the hospital and rehab centre, but now I am walking again after being in a wheelchair for almost 13 years!"
She has now signed on with the Robobank Women's Professional Cycling team with hopes to compete in the able bodies 2016 Olympics in Rio.
Truly an inspiration!
